NEC has contracts with over 50,000 pharmacies nation-wide. These rates are some of the most aggressive in the industry.
Pricing is established using a discount off of Average Wholesale Price (AWP). AWP is a set price by the pharmaceutical industry trade. There is only one AWP for any one particular drug and strength. Specialized pricing for many generic drugs is also used. These prices, although triggered by AWP, are basically flat rates at that moment in time for that drug. Most generic drugs are Maximum Allowable Cost (MAC) priced. MAC pricing ultimately saves the health plan money by limiting the reimbursement rate on individual products, while at the same time encouraging generic utilization.
What's more, NEC has special rate contracts for the dispensing of patient assistance drugs and program inventories.
